Six people were buried alive in their sleep when a torrent of slush flattened their homes after a cloudburst in the mountainous Tehri district early Thursday.

Of the dead in Nauthana village, which is 160km from here, two were children. Five bodies have been found. Rescue and search teams were still looking for one person as rain continued.

Houses collapsed when the cloudburst at around 2am flooded a local canal, bringing slush and mud to the remote village.

Lives were saved as many villagers had left their homes before the cloud burst, district disaster management office head Ashish Semwal said.

In the neighbouring Uttarkashi district, a man was crushed under a boulder that rolled down a hill.

The meteorological department has predicted moderate rains in state in next 24 hours.

The Badrinath Yatra was earlier halted following heavy rain on Tuesday after a road leading to the Hindu shrine was washed away.

Uttarakhand was hit by devastating floods and a landslide last year, killing around 5,000 pilgrims, tourists and locals.
