He’s no authority to comment on law & order: DGP

DIRECTOR GENERAL of Police (DGP), Bua Singh retorted to the statement of Lucknow University vice-chancellor (V-C), RP Singh, who had commented on the deteriorating law and order situation in the State, by saying that he was no authority to comment on the subject.

RP Singh, while declaring closure of the varsity and degree colleges, had held lackadaisical policing responsible for the poor security in the varsity and the student leaders going berserk at will. He had also commented on the deteriorating law and order situation statewide.

Bua Singh called a press conference late in the evening after he came to know about the comment of the V-C. He said that the V-C had no authority to comment on the transfer of police officials and it was solely a prerogative of the government and the DGP headquarters and that they need not seek permission from the V-C for the same.

Besides, the DGP said that the police were not responsible for the unruly situation on the varsity campus. For any disorder caused by students, the VC and the varsity administration were responsible. Whenever the varsity authorities had asked for police force, the same had been provided to them, he added.

He further said that the V-C had not contacted him or the principal secretary (home) about the trouble caused by student leaders recently.  Referring to the gunners provided to some student leaders, the DGP said that a committee comprising a senior IB official had been constituted to decide on the eligibility conditions. He added that he would get the complaints of criminal antecedents of those student leaders, who had been provided gunners, probed.

It was a decision of the V-C to close the varsity and to vacate the hostels within 24 hours. The DM and the SSP were sent to discuss the issue soon after the government came to know about the decision, he said. He also claimed that the law and order situation in the State was good.
