THOUGH THE agitation by the non-teaching employees of the Barkatullah University, under the aegis of the BU (Gair Shikshak) Karmachari Sangh continued on fifth day on Thursday with the employees remaining off-work for three hours, a breakthrough was achieved after the Vice-Chancellor Prof R S Sirohi agreed to fulfil most of their demands.

However, since the V-C did not give complete assurance to the employees regarding their main demand of conduction of the meeting of the Departmental Promotion Committee at the earliest, the employees had not called off the strike. Prof Sirohi told the Hindustan Times that he has asked the employees to come up with the required list of seniority of employees as also the procedure for the DPC and he would look into the process during the weekend.

He also said that he has accepted most of their other demands including appointments on compassionate ground – which he said would be done as per government rules.

The employees are agitating since November 5 to press various other demands including interest rate on CPF by the State Bank of India BU branch, construction of about 35 residential quarters for employees, depositing of PF contribution arrears into accounts of employees, fees exemption for wards of employees, advance approval of medical leaves, increase in vehicle allowance and medical allowance and so on.

On the fifth day today work was boycotted for three hours causing some troubles for the students who couldn’t get even the simplest of forms or documents from the university.

The employees had threatened to launch indefinite strike from November 13 if demands were not met by then. But going by Thursday’s meeting, the agitation might be called off soon.
