The Varanasi district administration was in a tizzy after a bomb hoax at Sankat Mochan temple late on Wednesday night.
District police chief Jogender Kumar and crime branch personnel rushed to the temple after the anonymous caller claimed that a bomb was planted at the shrine. However, nothing was found. The search ended around 10:30pm.
A class 6th student was detained for allegedly making the call.
Terrorists have targeted Varanasi at least three times in the last decade. Two major bomb explosions rocked the city on March 7, 2006, one of them at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple. The other explosion took place at the Varanasi Cantoment railway station. At least 28 people were killed and 101 others were injured in the blasts.
In November 23, 2007, there were three explosions on the Varanasi civil court and collectorate premises, killing 11 people. In December 2010, another explosion took place at Sheetla Ghat, next to the Dashashwamedh Ghat on the banks of the Ganga, killing a toddler.
