Some people can kill for love. University teacher Birlang Narzary demonstrated this by battering one of his students to death.

Narzary (32), a reader in the department of Bodo language in Gauhati University, went to the Jalukbari police station in Guwahati on Sunday night and confessed to having murdered Jharna Goyari. The girl - in her early 20s - was a third semester post-graduate student in the same department.

"He came here around 10 pm to confess, but soon started vomiting as he had consumed some poisonous substance in a bid to commit suicide," said an officer of that police station. "We rushed him to a local hospital for a stomach wash before shifting him to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital."

According to Jharna's classmates, the university was abuzz with an affair between her and Narzary. "But we never saw them together," said a boarder of the hostel Jharna stayed in.

Hailing from Bijni in western Assam's Chirang district, Jharna was a topper in her class. Unconfirmed reports suggested she had been engaged to a youth recently, something Narzary could not digest. A bachelor, Narzary joined the university last October.

The teacher confessed to the police of having murdered the girl at his official residence inside the university campus. Police said that bruises on the girl's throat, legs and head pointed to the use of a blunt object to murder her.

"There appears to be a love angle in it but we can't say this with certainty at this moment," said Senior Superintendent of Police Pradip Saloi. "We can come to some conclusion only after interrogating the teacher."

Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Akhil Medhi said the university has suspended Narzary with immediate effect and lodged an FIR against him.
