Varun Gandhi, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit, may be accused of delivering an “inciting speech” that “caused insecurity in the minds of one particular community”, but that doesn’t mean he has no Muslim support in his constituency.
Despite the allegations against the 29-year-old Gandhi, Mohammad Athar Khan, Mohammad Rizwan Malik, Aslam Qureshi and Sahahbuddin tour Muslim-dominated villages and localities in the constituency, convincing people to vote for him. They call themselves members of the ‘Muslim brigade’ committed towards ensuring Gandhi’s win.
They are worried about the fallout of Gandhi’s inflammatory speech. To minimise the damage, they tell Muslims that Gandhi is not at all communal.
