Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday inaugurated the 2,400 MW power plant of the Vedanta group in Jharsuguda district.
The group's energy arm, Sterlite Energy, will operate the plant. After the inauguration at the site, 370 km west of Bhubaneswar, Patnaik said: "The plant will not only position Orissa on the power map of the country but also give a boost to the state's infrastructure and industrial development process."
The group has invested about R10,500 crore in the power plant. It has interests in the metals business and oil and natural gas. This week it announced buying 40 per cent stake in Cairn India, which does drilling operations in Rajasthan. Sterlite Energy has set up a 1,215 MW captive power plant in Jharsuguda to cater for its R8,500-crore, 500,000-tonne aluminum plant Vedanta Aluminum.
