Rich and luxurious, velvet has long been known as the royal fabric. It has over the years, been used in palaces and homes of the rich. Now, affordable for all segments of the society, the fabric is making a grand comeback in the home décor segment for the Fall.
Velvet is a tricky fabric and can make or break the look of your home. When used well and in a reserved manner it can add oodles of style but the look can easily turn over-the-top and gaudy as well.
"Velvet is a lustrous high shine fabric perfect for fall. As a part of home decor they can be used in quilted bedspreads and are widely used in cushions and lamp shades. Velvets are also very durable for upholstery and draperies," says Anuja Gupta of Apartment 9.
Runners and curtains are also options that can be worked in velvet. “Use velvet vertically more than horizontally as the fabric catches impressions very fast. So, do not make coasters out of velvet,” suggests Monisha Gupta of Craft House.
Handle with care
“I use velvet mostly on chairs as velvet should be used more as a showpiece fabric due to its high gloss factor. The house will look too loud if it is used on a large area. Even a two-piece sofa set looks nice in velvet,” says interior designer Priya Kaker. She adds, “Velvet is an interesting fabric and is mostly in solid colours.”
Throwing around cushions with velvet self-print or with cutwork or appliqué work using velvet adds to a quiet ambience. “Do not mix two gaudy fabrics together unless yours is a flashy house,” suggests Kaker.
“Rainbow-coloured beads or metallic beads can be used to accessorise a velvet curtain or cushion cover. One can also use big decorative buttons to the curtain, cushion cover, runner or lampshade. Use satin as a lining for velvet cushion covers,” says Monisha.
Take Care: Light dusting and periodic dry cleaning are a must to make your velvet furnishings last long. Also, take care to not home wash this fabric.
Colour caution: Basic chocolates to wine and aubergines. Any colour in velvet can be used. But refrain from using a very light shade as it catches dust.
Restrained usage: Do not use velvet as upholstery in regular furniture as it will wear off soon. Use it on a two-seater sofa or a show chair. Use a seat cover for the velvet furniture when not in use.
Best combo: The plush texture and soft sheen of velvet can be used to create a focal point in a room. Combining velvet curtains with sheer draperies is a traditional window treatment.
Quality check: Velvet can checked for purity through touch. It should feel soft and not synthetic. Also, the weaves should be thick and tight. When buying ready-made furniture with velvet upholstery, ensure the frame of the furniture is thick as velvet needs extra support.
