The five men accused of raping a 24-year-old woman at an isolated spot on Raispur-road near Kamla Nehru Nagar locality of Ghaziabad on February 5 probably never had it this easy.

The rape victim is so traumatised that instead of deposing against the accused, she chose to end her life. Due to this the police's hands are also tied while the accused are lodged in Dasna Jail.

Also, the man she was with the night of the crime has refused to pursue the case.

The 23-year-old friend of the victim had met her on February 5 after meeting on a social networking site six months ago. They had decided to meet for the first time that night they were allegedly overpowered by the five accused and the raped the woman. After raping the woman right in front of her friend, the accused took away the man's laptop and mobile phone.

"He has categorically told us that he will just pursue a robbery case and not become a witness in the gangrape case. Even in his FIR he claimed that he did not know the girl. They will not even oppose the bail of the accused," said a senior UP Police officer.

Suicide attempt

Four days back, the victim tried to hang herself from the ceiling fan inside her room but was saved by her family members in time.

"We will not proceed to pursue her to come out against the accused in such a situation," said Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police.

The victim's father was willing to come forward earlier but later backed off. Fearing for the life of the woman and getting implicated in an abetment to suicide case, the police have decided to back off.
