A mobile phone video has emerged of a teenager detained by police on suspicion of involvement in a robbery being flogged with a leather strap at Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.
The video, which has been shared on social media, shows the teenager being held against a pillar while some men in plainclothes flog him. An uniformed policeman hands over the ‘patta’ or leather strap to a man in plainclothes and says, "Aur maro (Hit him some more)."
The video was reportedly shot by a constable.
Flogging a person with a strap is a popular way for policemen to extract a confession because it inflicts pain but leaves no marks that could get them in trouble.
Five policemen were suspended after the video surfaced and the chief of Merapur police station was removed for failing to supervise his men.
An inquiry has been ordered by the circle officer.

The teenager was nabbed with two other people in connection with the theft of a laptop two days ago.
Police claimed to have found firearms in the possession of the youngsters. Officials said they had admitted to a number of thefts, following which they were formally arrested.
Sub-inspector Ram Sanehi and four constables decided to teach the youngsters a lesson by flogging one of them in public. The teenager in the video hails from Nagla Nankar village and was brought out of the lock-up to an open space within the police station to be flogged.
Two constables, identified only as Shamsul and Betalal, held him against the pillar.
Constables Subodh Kumar and Deepak Kumar hit him several times. Sanehi can be seen in the video, egging on the others to hit the boy hard.
“This is a gross violation of human rights. Four constables and the sub-inspector were suspended and they will face an investigation for their conduct. If need be, a case will be registered,” said P Dinesh Kumar, the SSP of Farrukhabad.
