An eminent scientist of plant pathology, Dr Vijay Singh Thakur, joined as the new vice-chancellor of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, on Friday.
Dr Thakur, who was earlier serving as associate director of the university's Regional Horticultural Research Station, Mashobra, in Shimla district has also served on various positions.
All statutory officers, heads of departments, scientists and leaders of the university's employees' association accorded him warm welcome and congratulated for his new assignment.
In his brief address, Dr Thakur said his main focus would be on addressing the grievances of the farming community, strengthening of research and extension activities. He said efforts would be made to take the latest research techniques from laboratory to fields as it would certainly help farmers in uplifting their socio-economic conditions.
Meanwhile, general secretary of the University's Non-Teaching Employees Welfare Association Manmohan Sharma hoped that Dr Thkaur would make sincere efforts to enquire into the various charges of misappropriation of funds, misuse of powers and other corruption committed during the past five years on the campus, related complaints of the institutions' employees and district Congress committee's leaders.
