All the 72 houses of the Gangdaspur village will be demolished by the district administration as they have been illegally constructed on a village pond's land.

Residents of the village, which includes a primary school and eight houses of the Indira Awas Yojna, were asked to vacate the village within five days of the public announcement, which was made on Thursday.

Bijnor tehsildar Rakesh Gupta said the village had illegally encroached the pond's land and the administration would get it cleared.

District Magistrate, P Guru Prasad said the only way Gangdaspur would be spared was if the villagers could provide another pond of an equal area as an alternative.

The residents said their village was several hundred years old and that they should not suffer for a mistake made by the Tehsil administration or consolidation department.
