Four policemen, including an Inspector, were detained and later released by villagers at Endathur near Kancheepuram for not registering a case against a youth who allegedly abducted a woman, police said on Sunday.

The villagers, led by Endathur Panchayat Vice-President Thanigachalam, demanded that Inspector Kannan register a case against the youth. But the Inspector maintained that it was not a case of abduction since the woman had gone with the man of her free will.

During a function at the panchayat office on Saturday, Thanigachalam allegedly chided the Inspector for not taking any action on the matter and it resulted in an argument and exchange of blows. The villagers present then detained the men in uniform in the panchayat office, police said.

The villagers also blocked the Uthiramerur Melmaruvathur route.

On hearing the news, Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police and Tahsildar rushed to the spot and assured the villagers that an inquiry would be held following which they released the policemen.
