A prominent farmers' organisation has opposed Manipur government's plan to acquire agricultural land in Imphal East district for setting up an industrial centre.

The Manipur Loumi Lup (MLL)(Manipur Farmers' Organisation when translated) said in a statement on Saturday that they were opposed to the government's proposal to acquire a large tract of agricultural land at Chingarel area.

"The land is meant for cultivation and there is no other means of livelihood for the people in the area except land", the statement said.

Even if the industrial centre was set up, there was no guarantee that it would function properly, the statement said.

Hundreds of villagers had earlier protested by launching sit-in near the residence of Manipur Food and Civil Supply minister Y Erabot some days ago.

The MLL suggested the shifting of the proposed industrial centre to waste land in other parts of valley districts.

"The state government should try to use this waste land instead of destroying agricultural farms", the statement said.
