Recovery of a man's body with injury marks triggered violent clashes in the heart of the city on Saturday, leaving one policeman and six others injured.
Official sources said clashes broke out shortly after police recovered the body of Mohammad Maqbool Ganie (45), a resident of Saraibala from a shed at Maisuma, where he used to prepare barbaques for sale at Lal Chowk.
Angry groups of youth took to the streets and indulged in stone-hurling at Budshah chowk and Maisuma. They also enforced a shutdown at Lal chowk, Jehangir chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Gawkadal, Red Cross road and Regal Chowk.
At least seven persons, including a policeman, were injured as a pitched battle broke out. Police fired in the air and burst teargas shells at Budshah chowk and Maisuma to restore order.
The body bore several injury marks and police said he was hacked to death.
