Notwithstanding the continued war of words between leaders of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Congress Party, chief minister Virbhadra Singh has planned to visit Hamirpur district in the last week of October to give a fillip to various activities of the party and to gear up the cadre for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Considering the BJP’s stronghold over Hamirpur, the chief minister has been putting his all out efforts to overturn the applecart of the saffron party and grab the Hamirpur parliamentary constituency from them.

During one of its meetings, the Congress had decided to centre its focus on Hamirpur with an objective to end the Dhumals’ suzerainty over it, fearing that if Prem Kumar Dhumal and his family continued to win the Hamirpur seat, it won’t be difficult for them to win other Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Guided by this motive, Congress leaders have been targeting the Dhumals; while Virbhadra’s visit to Hamirpur, as seen by many, will set the pitch of a head-on battle between the Singhs and the Dhumals in the coming elections.

Virbhadra will take part in the annual function of the Sarv Kalyankari Sangathan – an outfit led by Sujanpur MLA Rajendra Rana, who had recently joined the Congress party. Rana had defeated the candidates of both the Congress and the BJP in the last assembly polls.

It is the second time that Rana has been inviting Virbhadra to Sujanpur with a rousing reception promised. By holding a massive show, Rana wants to showcase his muscle to the Opposition.

Sources with the Congress Party said party leaders has been pressing the chief minister since long to canvass all the five assembly segments of Hamirpur district to muster support for the Congress’ candidate, which otherwise lies with the BJP for over more than three decades.

Virbhadra is likely to witness the opening day of Hamirpur Utsav to be held from October 28-30, which coincides with the formation of Hamirpur district on September 1, 1972.

It was the then chief minister Yashwant Singh Parmar, who had conferred the district status on Hamirpur.
