A student of Visva-Bharati university was allegedly gang-raped for days by four youths — three of whom belong to the same department of the university.
A university spokesperson told HT on condition of anonymity, “We have received a complaint from the girl and it has been referred to the sexual harassment committee, which is probing it.”
Sources said that the student was sexually abused and that the matter had remained under wraps till she was admitted to the Peerson memorial hospital on Monday.
She was released on August 26.
A senior student of the department said the accused had tricked the girl, who hails from the North East, by helping her find accommodation close to the university.
“They got close to her and started the assault. They also recorded it on video and used it to blackmail her,” she said. She added, “We have learnt that they used to force her to go to a room at Gurupally — where they used to rape her repeatedly.”
A friend of the victim said that the girl had informed a senior official immediately after the incident but no action was taken.
“Instead of taking action against the accused the official tried to protect them. This is also a crime,” said a final year M Fine Arts student.
On Thursday the victim, along with her father, met university officials. “The authorities said that they have started a probe and action will be taken’” said the victim’s father, adding that he would launch a police complaint on Friday.
