Vivek Biman Maitra, who died on early Friday, was a force to reckon with in the Bharatiya Janata Party due to his proximity with the late Pramod Mahajan.
"In fact, he was Pramod Mahajan's man Friday. Mahajan trusted him more than anyone even in his own family and thus he acted as his son Rahul's guardian as well," said a senior BJP functionary.
Maitra's association with Mahajan, who died of bullet wounds on June 3, dated back to more than a decade.
"He was like a shadow to Pramod Mahajan and took care of everything related to Mahajan in a quiet manner," said sources close to the Mahajan family.
Describing Maitra as the backroom boy who had ensured that Rahul would get a post in the BJP's youth wing in the near future, a party insider said that he had become the young Mahajan's political mentor after his father's untimely death.
"Maitra used to stay at Pramod Mahajan's official residence - 7, Safdarjung Road - in Delhi. He had a separate room allotted to him and maintained an impressive library on his own," he added.
A senior leader said that Maitra, who was in his late 30s, had his family in Mumbai but would prefer to stay with the Mahajans. "That showed that he was not just a secretary but a part of the family."
"In fact, very few people know that Maitra had a very good rapport with senior functionaries of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) as well," said sources in the RSS, the ideological parent of the BJP.
"He did play an important role in keeping Pramod's contacts with the RSS alive," said a senior RSS functionary.
He was involved with BJP's youth wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his student days.
