Gujarat cadre IPS Vivek Srivastav, currently posted in the central IB at Patna, Bihar, has been posted as chief of Special Protection Group (SPG), which provides proximate security to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their families.
Srivastav is 1989 batch IPS of Gujarat cadre and has been on the central deputation for almost a decade.
“Vivek Srivastav has been selected for the head of SPG,” a top official told HT.
“He has been chosen because he has good experience of central IB and is professionally very competent officer and more importantly, the PM wanted only a Gujarat cadre officer as the SPG chief for strategic reasons,” the official added.
It may be noted that the Modi government had unceremoniously removed SPG chief Durga Prasad while he was with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Nepal to attend the Saarc summit.
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet had directed that the charge of SPG director may be looked after by the next senior-most officer till the appointment of a suitable successor. Prasad’ tenure had already ended on November 2nd and was on extension till his mysterious removal.
