VK Singh differs with Gogoi's view on border dispute

A day after Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi blamed lack of infrastructure as one of the major issues for inter-state border disputes, DoNER Minister Gen (retd) V K Singh on Friday disagreed with him.

"Rifts on borders do not take place because of the infrastructure," Singh told reporters on the last day of conference of Chief Ministers of North East in Guwahati.

He, however, did not elaborate on the issues that create border problems between two states in North East.

While giving his speech yesterday at the same conference, Gogoi had cited lack of infrastructure as one of the main problems for ongoing inter-state boundary disputes in the entire North East.

Commenting on the ongoing violence along Assam-Nagaland border, Singh, Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, said the border problem between two states has been there for some time but yesterday's meeting between the Chief Ministers of the two states in the presence of Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju is likely to bring in a positive change.

"This time after this violence occurred, the Chief Ministers have met along with the Minister of State for Home Affairs. I am quite sure there will be a better understanding between the two and measures would have been worked out to avoid any such violent incidents in the future," he added.

Rijiju held a meeting with Assam and Nagaland Chief Ministers where it was decided to work out a joint mechanism to defuse recurring tension along the border between the two states.

Altogether nine persons were killed and many injured in firing and arson by miscreants from Nagaland in Uriamghat area of Golaghat district in Assam on August 12. Over 200 houses were set ablaze and more than 10,000 people fled from their homes and took shelter in 12 relief camps.
