Days after joining the BJP, former army chief, General VK Singh said that he was open to taking over the defence ministry if his party came to power.
Speaking to HT over the phone Gen Singh said that this did not mean that he had a “deal” with the party for any post. “Some people might try to show that I have struck a deal with the party. There is no such deal.”
However, he felt that he had the right qualifications to head the ministry and there was no impropriety in such a move. “I know what needs to be done. I have the capability to put the ministry back on an even keel. Many things have gone wrong and I can work towards setting them right.”
He criticised the events that led to Adm D K Joshi’s resignation following the tragic mishap of INS Sindhuratna, which claimed the lives of two young officers.
“(Adm) Jo(shi) must have been pushed to the limit to have put in his papers. I salute his decision, but this shows how wrong things have gone. I have the expertise and can clean up the mess,” he said.
