ADVISOR TO the Election Commission of India KR Prasad said the machinery had been geared up to ensure that all voters were issued photo identity cards before dates for the UP assembly poll were announced.

Talking to newsmen here today, Prasad said for the convenience of the working class, camps to take photographs for the preparation of voter’s identity cards would be held during night hours. For those who would not be able to travel to the booths, arrangements for photography would be made at their residences.

After reviewing the progress of identity card preparation in Kanpur Dehat and City, Prasad said 68 per cent of job had been done. Several teams had been prepared to complete the remaining work, he added. He said these teams would work till 10.30 pm.

Prasad further said that 67,000 names of the dead voters were deleted from the list and the verification of people living at permanent and temporary addresses were being made. Referring to violence during the recent municipal election, he said the commission was vigilant and would arrange adequate security.

On when the poll would be held, Prasad said the EC could only advice the government about the preferred timing.
