PM-Zardari talks are small steps forward after a long time
With reference to the report Terror tops PM-Zardari lunch menu (April 9), it is encouraging to know that after his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari declared that the talks between the two leaders had been constructive. After the 2001 talks in Agra between former PM AB Vajpayee and the then president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf, there has been no meeting at this level due to various reasons, including the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008. The present round is a welcome step towards restoring peace with our neighbour.

Trying to divide and rule
In his article Not caste in stone (The Poverty Line, April 10), Abhijit Banerjee rightly states that caste-based discrimination is on the decline in India but it hasn’t vanished completely. This is partly due to our politicians who try to divide people on the lines of caste and religion in order to win elections. We recently witnessed this in Uttar Pradesh where members of the Congress promised sub-quotas to certain communities in the hope of getting their votes. However, I disagree with Banerjee’s view that compulsion works better than persuasion in bringing about reforms.
