Set up fast-track courts to tackle corruption cases

With reference to the editorial There’s nowhere to hide (January 24), we must congratulate the Central Bureau of Investigation judge, Vinod Kumar, for his verdict in the Haryana teacher recruitment scam case. The sentencing of former Haryana chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal president Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala is a message for the political class and hopefully, the ruling will deter other politicians from indulging in such activities. To improve the situation, the government should also set up fast-track courts for cases related to corruption.

The two are very different

Madhu Purnima Kishwar’s article Clothed in hypocrisy (January 24) reminds me of a comment made by former BBC journalist Mark Tully. He said that in this country, the liberal elite seem to think that westernisation equals modernisation. The two are not the same, but most Indians tend to confuse these two. Indeed, many western rules and methods are nothing less than medieval.

This refers to Sitaram Yechury’s article Zero tolerance, please (Left Hand Drive, January 23). Due to an editing error on our part, the article mistakenly states, “Hedgewar’s personal diary notes of March 20 reveal his fascination and admiration of the manner in which Italian fascism was training its youth (read storm-troopers) militarily.” The reference here is to BS Moonje’s personal diary and not Hedgewar’s. The mistake is regretted.
