Another fuel price hike will hit the common man hard
With reference to the report Petrol, diesel prices hiked by R1.50, 45 paise (Febr-uary 16), it is distressing to note that the prices of petrol and diesel have been hiked once again. At a time when incomes are stagnant and the prices of basic necessities like housing and food are rising by leaps and bounds, another hike in fuel prices will adversely affect the common man. This is the 20th hike in petrol prices since the fuel was deregulated and it only shows that the Union government doesn’t have a proper policy on the issue and that oil firms have been given a free hand to fix fuel prices.

What about judicial reforms?
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s concern over the backlog of over three crore pending judicial cases is valid but he cannot discount the fact that unless the government creates additional courts and fills vacancies, the disposal rate of cases will remain low (Manmohan raises alarm over 3 crore cases in courts, February 17). To do this, the government needs to show political will and undertake judicial and legal reforms without delay.

Go after rapists, not victims
With reference to the editorial Silence is not golden (February 15), it is inspiring to read that more and more women are speaking out against sexual abuse. According to the 2012 National Crime Records Bureau statistics, rape with 24,206 cases in 2011 emerged as the biggest crime in India. Unfortunately, many cases of sexual assault go unreported. We must realise that it’s our responsibility to report every case of sexual assault because silence will not only embolden offenders but will also contribute to a patriarchal notion of shame that is associated with sexual crimes. It’s time our society goes after the sex offenders and not victims.
