With reference to Sitaram Yechury’s article Dressed up as divinity (Left Hand Drive, September 3), it is appalling that in India people confuse religion with blind faith. The narrative of India as a vibrant democracy falls flat when rationalist voices are silenced. The forced exile of rationalist Sanal Edamaruku, who has been accused of blasphemy after he claimed the water that started dripping from a cross at a local church was not a ‘miracle’ but just a plumbing defect, makes India look regressive in the international arena. We must realise that a 21st century India needs minds that reason and not blindly follow rituals and customs.

The sudden death of veteran broadcaster David Frost, best remembered for his post-Watergate interviews with former US President Richard Nixon, is a great loss to the world of television and journalism. Television journalists, especially in India, need to learn from him the uncanny knack of extracting intriguing information from interviewees without intimidating them. It was his fearless and non-aggressive style of questioning that got him answers.

Don’t force the issue with Sachin
With reference to the editorial Lower the pitch (September 3), it’s imprudent of the BCCI to organise the West Indies tour to India with Mumbai as one of the venues to give a grand farewell to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, especially when he has not expressed any desire to retire. Instead of resorting to pressure tactics, the BCCI should let Tendulkar decide when the time is right to call it a day. Moreover, Tendulkar deserves a better farewell match than this.
