The PM must mean what he says. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent warning to Pakistan was a result of public pressure and not sincere concern for the nation (PM rules out business as usual as India turns up heat on Pak, January 16).india Updated: Jan 17, 2013 22:34 IST
Bring Owaisi to book so that no one else makes the same mistake
Rajdeep Sardesai in We must speak up now (Beyond The Bite, January 11) rightly states that the best way to deal with political rabble-rousers like Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi is to call their bluff. Other than Owaisi’s supporters, no one has defended his style of politics, which is clearly past its sell-by date. Those who believe that Owaisi should be let off since no action was taken against the VHP’s Praveen Togadia for his hate speech are only encouraging communal hatred. The fact that the State failed to bring Togadia to book emphasises the need to punish Owaisi so that no one else makes the same mistake in future.

Sardesai’s article is timely but it seems that he hasn’t been able to understand the gravity of Owaisi’s crime. In fact, Sardesai doesn’t state anything new. His article is merely a roundup of various news channel debates on Owaisi and Togadia.

The PM must mean what he says
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent warning to Pakistan was a result of public pressure and not sincere concern for the nation (PM rules out business as usual as India turns up heat on Pak, January 16). The UPA has done business with Pakistan while admonishing it many times in the past. So it’s tough to say whether the PM really means what he says. Perhaps the PM could learn a few lessons from Indian Army chief Bikram Singh, who, in a bold statement, told the Pakistani army to mend its ways or expect retaliation from India soon.
