Number of seats will determine Nitish Kumar’s bargaining power
With reference to the editorial Into the battle without a plan (Our Take, April 2), it is not correct to say that BJP chief Rajnath Singh formed a new team without any tangible plan for the 2014 elections. With the help of a deftly designed political marketing strategy, including social media exposure, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi successfully created a ‘Modi-mania’ that Singh could not ignore. Many people predict that if Modi is the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, allies like the JD(U) will move away from the NDA. Such a thing will only happen if the JD(U) wins a substantial number of seats in the election.

Left is no match for Congress
Sitaram Yechury in More than just a front (Left Hand Drive, April 2) does not believe in accepting the reality that the Left has rendered itself irrelevant in coalition politics. Yechury must understand that the Congress can more than just match the Left, despite the former’s pseudo-secular credentials. He needs to spell out what the party stands for rather than lash out at the shortcomings of other parties. It is time development-related topics got its place in the agenda political parties put forward.

SC helps the medicine go down
This refers to Novartis loses landmark patent fight, key cancer drug to remain affordable (April 2), the Supreme Court’s court’s rejection of Novartis’ patent claim is commendable. Patients are being looted by drug companies. The exorbitant prices of branded medicines make treatment unaffordable for a number of diseases. The difference between the cost of generic and branded versions of the same medicine is shared by the drug-makers, retail sellers and doctors. It should be made mandatory to prescribe a medicine by its generic name.
