Sole survivor of the 32 members who walked out of the CPI national executive to form the CPM in 1964, VS Achuthanandan could not make it to the party's politburo on Monday.
As he came out of the venue of the CPI-M leadership meet in Kozhikode, the 89-year-old former Kerala chief minister said, "I have nothing to say… I will work in the party as before."
Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, however, was retained despite his absence at the Congress.
"It is indeed ironical the party accommodated a leader who decimated Communism in West Bengal and threw out a mass leader who lost power by a whisker," an indignant VS camp follower said.
The others in the politburo from Kerala include Pinarayi Vijayan, the party state secretary, former home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and new member and legislator MA Baby. Prakash Karat was re-elected general secretary for a third consecutive term.
Things were fine for the veteran till a decade back when the tiff with Vijayan took a turn for the worse.
