I was just sitting, looking out of the window at the beautiful scenery and the cluster of quaint houses as we landed in Florence, Italy, when it hit me. It was sudden... an epiphany of what I was looking at and not really seeing. It was probably the first time in a long time that I noticed where I was and felt that rush of anticipation of discovering something new! I saw a wonderful city waiting to be explored. All I needed was time and the inclination. Do you think that in our rush to do what we do and to conquer the world, we’re missing out on the simple yet amazing things in life? Maybe…
Since winning Miss World, I’ve had the privilege to travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Every trip, every stop was a whirlwind of people to meet, events to attend and things to do. Then came the wonderful world of cinema. Yet again, it gave me the opportunity to travel. But this time I was in love… with everything about the filmmaking process. So, I spent every hour, wherever I was, consumed by it.
In all of this, I travelled the world but never really saw it. I never opened my eyes to the beauty, the diversity, the cultures. It’s so not who I am. I have always loved to visit new places, meet people and try new cuisines. And, when I was handed the opportunity on a golden platter, I ignored it. But life is all about changes. I’ve woken up to what I’ve been missing and I know it is rectifiable. The time is right!
We had a long journey to Florence, but I wasn’t tired. My trip was of just three days and packed. But this time, I knew that I would savour every aspect of where I was.
The wanderlust has been awakened in me once again! But I’m starting slowly. I can’t just pack my bags and take off to explore the world. I have too many things to do; too many responsibilities, which I take very seriously and also happen to love. So, I’m taking it one step at a time and starting with Florence.
As I walk out into the cold air, I know that I’m going to have a lot of fun. There may not be time to see it all, but I know I will taste it, experience it, even if it’s by just looking out of the window as I drive to my destination, tasting the local cuisine or even by walking around the city, late at night, when it’s asleep. I am also confident that my trip will be hugely interesting. I will meet with the illustrious Ferragamo family, whose gracious invitation sees me in Italy. I will have the privilege of having a cast of my foot created for the Salvatore Ferragamo Shoe Museum and be a part of an exciting fashion photo-shoot for the magazine L’Officiel.
I will be very happy to share every aspect of this exciting trip with you over the next couple of weeks. You never know… it could be the start of a regular travelogue! Look out world, here I come!
