Wanted criminal shot dead in Varanasi

A criminal wanted in a dozen cases of murder and extortion was killed and three police personnel injured in an encounter between the two sides in neighbouring Chanduali district, police said on Monday.

The criminal Sanjay Pandey was carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head.

The encounter took place last night when a police party and special operation group personnel saw three persons moving suspiciously near the railway crossing near Sayyadraja police station in the district. When challenged, they opened indiscriminate fire on the police party.

The police also retaliated and in the exchange of fire, Pandey was killed while two others managed to escape.

Three police personnel including constable Satish Mishra, sustained bullet injuries in the encounter.

Pandey was involved in over a dozen cases of murder, loot, robbery, kidnapping and extortion in UP and Bihar.
