A ward boy of a hospital in Kanpur was arrested on Monday for allegedly molesting a British woman, the police said.

“The employee with LLR hospital in Kanpur molested the British woman, whose fiance is undergoing treatment for diarrhoea in the hospital,” deputy inspector general of Kanpur, HR Sharma said.

“The incident took place on Sunday morning. Ranveer Singh, a ward boy in the hospital, on the pretext of administering medicines to the foreign patient entered his room and molested the woman,” Sharma said.

Soon after the incident, the accused fled and was untraceable. He was arrested only after senior police officials served an ultimatum to his father and uncle — both police constables — to divulge his whereabouts and produce him or face action.

After the arrest was made, Ranveer was taken to the victim for identification. The victim clapped and gestured thumbs up to the police officers holding Ranveer at the doorstep of the intensive care unit (ICU) where she was admitted.

“Oh you got the right man. Yes he is the man,” she told district magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar. “Congratulations to all of you. You guys did a great job and so quickly,” she said.

Ranveer was immediately sent to jail and case under section 354 and 376/511 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him. Earlier, a couple of faculty members of the hospital made desperate attempts to save the ward boy.
