Warm winter cocktails

This winter, spruce up your spirits with these heady cocktails that will warm not just the body, but the hearts too.

Gone are the days when all you could have to satiate your cocktail craving, was a Margarita, a Mohito or one of those old traditional cold concoctions, even on a chilly winter evening. Today, with warm winter cocktails such as toddies, spiced rums and even good ol’ brandy brews served across bars and restaurants, there is no dearth of options for guzzlers to beat the chill.

“While cocktails are generally served chilled at 6-7 degree, in winters less of ice and more of warming ingredients such as brandy, red wine, rum and cognac are used, and served at a temperature of 12-13 degree,” says mixologist Deepak Fartyal of Club Quantum, The Leap. And, the best part is that apart from the spirits, most winter cocktails are loaded with natural warming ingredients such as allspice, cinnamon, ginger syrup and even tea decoctions.

“Allspice and ginger help fight cold and bad throat. Winter cocktails often contain Kahlua, which is high in caffeine that keeps the body warm,” says Ashish Malhotra, bar manager, F Bar & Lounge.

In case you feel too lazy to head out, try these cocktail recipes at home to warm up your winter. All you need is some high spirit!

Winter Sunrise

Ingredients
3 tbsp cognac
1 tbsp triple sec
(preferably Cointreau)
2-3 star anis
2-3 sticks of cinamon
2-3 cloves
2-3 elaichi (big and small)
2 slices of fresh ginger
1 tbsp orange juice
1 tbsp lemon juice
3-4 black pepper

Method
Muddle all the ingredients with four tablespoon hot water, and strain in a cognac glass. Heat the alcohol for 30 seconds, and pour it into the glass with orange juice, lemon juice and sugar syrup. Garnish with a slice of orange.

Kentucky Mulled Cider

Ingredients
2.5 tbsp bourbon whiskey
Hot apple cider
1 thinly sliced lemon with rind
1 dash of allspice
1 tall cinnamon stick

Method
Add the whiskey to a footed mug. Then, fill the mug with hot apple cider and a dash of allspice. Garnish with a tall cinnamon stick and lemon slice and Kentucky Mulled Cider is ready to warm up your winter.

Brandy Toddy

Ingredients
3 tbsp brandy
1tsp sugar
1 lemon peel, twisted

Method
Mix brandy, sugar and lemon peel in a Boston shaker. Mix it well. Put the mixture over the ice in the cocktail glass. Serve on the rocks.

Mexican Dusk

Ingredients
2tbsp tequila
2tbsp kahlua
1 cup espresso coffee
Chocolate powder
2.5 tbsp whipped cream

Method
Barring the cream, mix all the other ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Pour in a tall glass or coffee mug, top it with whipped cream and serve.

House Spice Warm Rum Toddy

Ingredients
1 cinnamon stick
4-5 cloves
1 star anise
1 slice fresh ginger
1tsp honey
2tbsp black tea decoction
2tbsp hot water
4tbsp white rum
Mandarin tuile

Method
Muddle all the ingredients and add warm water, tea decoction and rum. Serve warm in a warm wine glass or brandy balloon. Garnish with a star anise.
