VS Achuthanandan

Veteran CPM leader VS Achuthanandan has said he was dropped from the party politburo in 2009 for telling the truth in the Lavalin power scam, in which party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan is an accused.

In an interview to Malayalam channel ‘Mathrubhumi News’, the 89-year-old leader said he still felt the Lavalin deal was a big kickback and reiterated he would stand by the truth whatever be the consequence.

The case pertains to an agreement between the Canadian power giant SNC Lavalin and the Kerala government, which allegedly caused a loss of Rs.374.5 crore to the exchequer.

The final agreement with the company was signed in 1990, when Pinarayi Vijayan was the power minister.

What irked Achuthanandan was that official faction recently pulled out an old report by party central committee member P Karunakaran, which squarely blamed him for implicating Pinarayi in the case.

“I was dropped from the politburo for telling the truth in Lavalin case. It was the finding of the CAG. And this was not a case framed to trap anybody. I still feel there is a case,” he said.

“How could Pinarayi become an accused in the case if there was nothing irregular in it?” Achuthanandan asked.

“The contention in the CBI report that he has not made any monetary advantage is supported only by the statement of a witness,” he added.

Achuthanandan said he wouldn’t mind if his statement invited disciplinary measures.
