india Updated: Oct 29, 2006 00:54 IST

Named after the queen of Avadh, this is one of the posh wards in the city. The areas covered under the ward are Mahanagar Extension, Chandganj, Chandganj Garden, Shekhupura, Mahanagar Peeli Collony, Begum Hazrat Mahal colony and Pratap Park.

Residents of the ward gets 7 out of 10. The area loses marks due to problem of water supply in localities like Mahanagar Extension, Shekhupura and Chandganj Garden. Problem of water logging due to poor drains, bad maintenance of parks and encroachments on them add to the troubles of residents.

RESIDENT OF Peeli Colony, Mohan Swaroop, says water problem is acute and could very well become the waterloo for candidates in the elections. Bad water supply in the areas like Mahanagar Peeli Colony cannot be pardoned, he declares.

Mahanagar resident Anita Singh says “Boundaries were built in some parks in the area but they have no tree or flowers and are soft target for the land mafia.”

Resident of Shekhupura, Sajjan Tewari, says water logging occurs due to poor drainage. Often, the colony remains waterlogged throughout the rainy season.

Another resident Ritu Sharma sewer lines in the area are usually choked, the problem of sewer overflow is rampant in the ward.

Replying to the charges, corporator GD Shukla says, “During my tenure, I got three tube wells installed in the ward. Today, nearly all areas accept Shekhupura are getting adequate water supply. It is easy to blame anyone but ask the resident what was the condition five years back and what is now. They water supply is getting better, there are better roads, all the lanes are pucca and coated with interlocked tiles. There is no encroachments on roads in my ward. ”

Regarding the drains, he said, “The drains are regularly cleaned and water logging occurs but only for a few minutes.”
