Water outlets or pollution centres?

DRINKING WATER outlets at the platforms of the Central Railway Station have become a source of polluting the environment. They also pose serious threat to the health of passengers.

Despite tall claims of the railway administration, no drive was launched to maintain clean surrounding near the water outlets at the platforms. One can witness these outlets surrounded with filth and other waste material thrown by the passengers and railway employees.

Most of time, the pipes of water basins remain choked and filled with foul-smelling water. Safai Karmcharis seldom take notice of the choked drains and the passengers are forced to fill their water containers from these water taps.

One of the Safai Karmcharis said they used to clean the basins and cleared the choked pipes every hour, but a large number of passengers who visited the platforms failed to cooperate them in keeping the water basins clean. They not only threw waste materials around the water outlets but also put things in the basin to cause blockage of the drainpipe.

Many passengers also used these water outlets for washing dirty underwear of their children, he alleged.

He said that since the officials took rounds at the platform No 1, the water outlets were comparatively better there, but the condition of outlets at other platforms was horrible. One could not think of using water from these taps. Safai Karmcharis preferred that the railway administration should introduce penalty for those who misused the water outlets.
