Waveriders, Warriors face off in HIL opener

Delhi Waveriders will play the opening match against Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League (HIL) at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi on January 14.

Delhi Waveriders will play the opening match against Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League (HIL) at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi on January 14.

The HIL on Thursday announced the 2013 season match schedule, which will start on January 14 and end on Febuary 10.

The league will feature 34 matches in 28 days and will be played in five franchisee cities — Delhi, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ranchi.

The opening ceremony will be held Jan 14 here just before the first match. Jalandhar will host the second match at Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium where the home team Jaypee Punjab Warriors will face Ranchi Rhinos on Jan 16.

Mumbai Magicians will play their first match here against Delhi Waveriders the same day.

The semi-final matches will be played Feb 9 with the final being played the next day. The venue for the semi-finals and final is yet to be decided.

Matches at Delhi, Jalandhar, Mumbai and Ranchi will be played under floodlights while matches in Lucknow will be played during daytime.

Doha: Vice captain VR Raghunath scored twice as defending champions India started off their Asian Champions Trophy campaign with a 4-0 victory over China, in New Delhi on Thursday.

Right winger SV Sunil struck early on in the 13th minute, while statemate and star of the recent Hockey India League auctions Raghunath, converted the team's first penalty corner five minutes later and then another in the 52nd minute.

A minute later Birendra Lakra deflected a carpet drive off Rupinder Pal Singh, which hit a defender's leg and rolled into the net.
