Why have the police not been able to control crime in the city?
This is not true. We have taken all possible steps to curb crime in the city. People know how quickly we responded to the molestation case on the MG Road on New Year’s Eve. No doubt, crime-related incidents take place in the city, but we are doing our job well. We have been able to solve many cases that took place recently. Our Facebook page is full of praises for our handling of the case. The situation could have gone completely out of hand.

What factors are responsible for the increasing crime rate in the city?
The root cause of crime rate in the city is the migrant population. Besides this, criminals from other states have also come and settled down here. They also bring weapons with them, which are later used to create law and order problem in the city.

What challenges do the police face to counter crime?
Adequate manpower, public support and awareness can help solve the problem. Also, VIP security is a big concern for us as a part of our police force is deployed for the task.

What steps can make a difference to counter crime and criminals?
Only technology can make such a difference. Our system should be computerised. There should be a collective data of criminals and every crime-related activity.

What steps should the police department initiate to better the situation?
We have a good intelligence network. We are getting new equipment and our police force is being equipped with new technologies. The problem of staff crunch will also be solved soon.

What is the biggest challenge for the city police to control crime and maintain the law and order situation in the city?
We do not have enough resources and manpower. The population has increased and what we need is a good set-up to curb crime and catch its perpetrators. Staff shortage is the main problem. We also need support of people. Many people don’t follow rules in the city.
