The police claimed to have solved the murder of senior Congress leader Pradeep Tyagi who was shot in his Ghaziabad home by three unidentified assailants on December 11.

The announcement came an hour after Minister of State for Home Affairs Sri Prakash Jaiswal visited the slain leader’s residence. “The state government needs to improve the law and order situation, otherwise development will suffer,” Jaiswal said.

The police said they worked on their earlier theory that Bhagmal Tyagi, along with two other inmates –– Anil Tyagi and Babloo Tyagi –– hatched a criminal conspiracy in Dasna Jail to kill the Congress leader.

Anil and Babloo were released about a week before Pradeep’s murder. Bhagmal Tyagi is still lodged at Dasna jail. One more person, Raju Pandit, has been added to the list of conspirators.

“The motive of the murder is personal enmity and a dispute over a piece of land in Morta village. Also, Pradeep Tyagi interfered in a court matter related to Bhagmal Tyagi’s case and hindered his bail procedures,” SP (City) Vijay Bhushan said.

Anil Tyagi was arrested again on Thursday. Police claim he is wanted in 23 cases in Ghaziabad and Meerut and he was the one who provided arms for Pradeep’s murder. The other accused are still absconding.

Speaking to HT, Pradeep’s son Kunal said, “The assailants were in the age-group of 24-25 years and my mother saw them. We want them to be identified.”

Members of both Pradeep and Bhagmal’s families were not convinced by the police theory. Bhagmal’s family denied his involvement in the murder.

Kunal reiterated the two families never had any sort of enmity.
