The government has given thrust to hydropower. But it has a long gestation period. Can we bring it down?

Certainly, the gestation period can be brought down by a few years, provided we have a good project plan and take into account all aspects that are necessary for their implementation. In addition, we have to be innovative and bold in our approach.

Do you mean that the current projects lack these factors?

We have an excellent project design capability that can meet global standards but lack the ability to visualise the vagaries at different levels that delay the project. We need to have the vision and be prepared to meet the vagaries that could come up at every step of project execution.

What technical impediments an organisation like NHPC is facing?

There is a tremendous shortage of engineering talents. Most prefer jobs in the private sector. We need to make the sector more attractive for the younger lot. Salary and perks should match with the private sector. We already provide the best working environment and benefits. Secondly, there is an urgent need for new technologies for quick implementation of projects.

What are the current strengths of NHPC at a technical level?

We have a world-class design centre and have expertise in advanced technology engineering software. They get support from an excellent team of geologist, hydrologist, electromechanical, technical and generation experts.
