We will never desert Mahajan's family: BJP
Javdekar's comments came against the backdrop of Sushma Swaraj seeking to distance the party from the episode.india Updated: Jun 08, 2006 18:03 IST
The BJP on Thursday said the party would never desert the family of late leader Pramod Mahajan, including his son Rahul embroiled in a drug abuse case.
"The BJP does not believe in deserting the family of its dedicated workers. Pramod had served the party for a long time. Now that he is no more, the party will certainly take care of his bereaved family", party spokesman Prakash Javdekar told a press conference.
Asked why BJP leaders had distanced themselves from Rahul following the drug abuse episode, Javdekar said "this is not correct. The day Rahul was admitted to the Apollo hospital in Delhi, party national President Rajnath Singh and senior leader Vinay Katiyar had paid a visit. Even afterwards, we have been keeping an eye on the well-being of Rahul and his family".
He said the party was only trying "not to interfere in the legal process that has been initiated against Rahul. The BJP wants the trial to be impartial and if Rahul is found guilty, then he should get the same punishment that any other person found guilty of a similar offence would get".
Javdekar's comments came against the backdrop of senior party leader Sushma Swaraj seeking to distance the party from the Rahul Mahajan episode, terming it as "a family matter".
