The BJP will respect Pratibha Patil as the new President, as in recognising the highest constitutional office. Leader of Opposition LK Advani himself signalled the end of a month-long campaign against her, saying, “The BJP considers the sanctity of the country’s highest Constitutional office to be more important than the person who has been elected to occupy it.”

Advani remarked this while addressing the BJP’s youth wing’s national executive. “I wish to make it clear once again that the NDA/BJP campaign was not against any particular individual; it was against the UPA’s evident unconcern about issues of corruption and criminalisation,” he said on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, Advani told the BJP Yuva Morcha that the party is unapologetic about the issues that they had raised. “The issues will continue to be relevant in the time to come, much like before. The election’s outcome does not in the least diminish their importance to India’s polity. On the contrary, it has provoked all right-thinking people in the country to seriously debate about the choice made by UPA’s leadership.”

Advani said that Patil won primarily because of the clear majority it enjoyed in the Electoral College. “If the general public had an opportunity to express their preference, they would have certainly rejected the choice of the ruling coalition.”
