When friends become enemies!

They say it’s lonely at the top. If lonely means having no friends that match your stature, they are right. Friendship between equals is an elusive phenomenon in Bollywood.

They say it’s lonely at the top. If lonely means having no friends that match your stature, they are right. Take the recent Shah Rukh-Salman spat. After years of ‘are they rivals, are they friends’ speculation, the duo came together recently to celebrate Salman’s girlfriend Katrina Kaif’s birthday. But unnecessary jibes led to very public fisticuffs between the two. And who should play peacemaker but Aamir Khan in a fitting parody of the reign of the triumvirate.

Claws out
It’s not only the boys who fight. Girls cut each other dead, too — though it rarely or never comes to blows. The behind-the-scenes rivalry between Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta in their young(er) days made headlines, even as the cute girls in pink sang Piya Piya on stage. They were at the top of their game and their mutual animosity was as famous as their career. On Koffee with Karan, Rani said of Preity, “People thought we were friends just because we looked alike.”

One of Rani’s co-guests on the show was Kareena Kapoor, known for her strong and vocal opinion about most co-stars. Kareena was apparently best friends with Priyanka Chopra until Aitraaz. And then Priyanka’s hot seductress avatar made her the cynosure of all eyes and Bebo, who could not stand being left out, made a comment about Priyanka stripping in her movies.

The buddy-buddy scenario went bust. The feud has been rekindled following Bebo’s comments about how no actress except Rani knows how to act and Priyanka’s retort about respecting what “seniors” have to say — a remark probably meant to make Bebo feel old!

Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone danced together for Rahul Dravid’s IPL team, but reports say that Deepika does not like Katrina’s intimacy with her beau Ranbir Kapoor. Katrina and Ranbir became close during a location shoot, say sources.

Goodbye, Ms Rai
Then there were gym buddies Viveik Oberoi and Abhishek Bachchan who had a falling out — for love. Viveik’s ex, the current Mrs Bachchan Jr, Aishwarya Rai, has her own ghosts of friendships past.

Once close to Rani, she was reportedly very upset when her friend coolly replaced her in Chalte Chalte without even asking Ash how she felt about it. A cordial relationship among equals in Bollywood, it would seem, is a chimera.
