Where did you disappear?

HT Café invites readers to share some of their experiences. Rebecca D’souza regrets losing her best friend...

We met at one of the many sandwichwalas in Mumbai. It was quite coincidental actually. Another friend had seen this girl walking past the place we used to hang out at, and decided that he’d go make friends with her. This was how we were introduced. We soon became fast friends and were never seen without the other.

Breaking rules
We were in our teens and enjoyed breaking the rules our parents set for us. It was especially hard for her as she came from a conservative family and her parents were very strict. She, still managed to accompany me wherever I went. She would save up her pocket money to buy me a present on my birthday. We shared everything - from clothes and stories to books. We were like sisters. As I don’t have any siblings that is the closest I’ll ever get to experiencing that kind of bond.

As the years passed, I started seeing someone, I guess I sort of left her out. I was preoccupied with my boyfriend and she faded into the background. Suddenly, I didn’t have time for her anymore. I didn’t even know when she vanished from my life.

Still searching
Today, I come across many people and as I get to know them better, I search for her in them. But I think no one will ever be able to replace her. I never understood the value of our friendship then. No one regrets it more than I do today.
