BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi was apparently responding to Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal’s remark that Modi, who used to be a tea-seller in his youth, did not deserve to be a prime minister as he lacked the vision to run the country.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) PM candidate Narendra Modi on Friday said a tea-seller better deserved to be the prime minister of the country than those who make a sellout of the nation.

"Who deserves to be the prime minister — a tea seller or a person who sells the country? The people will decide if a tea-seller will be PM or not,” Modi told an election rally in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh.

Modi was apparently responding to Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal’s remark that Modi, who used to be a tea-seller in his youth, did not deserve to be a prime minister as he lacked the vision to run the country.

The Gujarat strongman said three generations of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty were responsible for the country’s ills.

"The shahzada (Rahul Gandhi) had come here and he talked about changing the system. He should know his father (Rajiv Gandhi), his grand-mother (Indira Gandhi) and great grand-father (Jawaharlal Nehru) made this system,” Modi said.

"It is they who distorted and misused the system for personal gains. When they know that it is the time to go, they are talking about systems," he said.

Modi said the Congress leaders were so preoccupied with watching his movements and activities that they had no time to run the country.

It is for the third time he is canvassing for Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh in the state where the second phase of polling will be held on Tuesday.

Of late, Modi has drawn flak for personal attacks on Congress and other leaders. But BJP has defended him saying he had not been spared of such attacks.

Addressing another rally in Korba, 200 km away from Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, Modi said the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states don’t mix with people they “fear might throw stones at them” because they “failed to give account of what they did during their tenures”.
