Why Chinese fear HH Dalai Lama

india Updated: Aug 10, 2006 17:23 IST

The recently heightened onslaught on His Holiness the Dalai Lama by the Chinese government is a desperate attempt to counter his ever-increasing stature.

This Chinese propaganda is not new and it shows their increasing paranoia and insecurity towards the unfathomable respect, honour and recognition that the international community continues to bestow upon HH the Dalai Lama. In this moment of weakness and insecurity, they have no choice but to condemn and malign him.

Even Zhang Qingli, the Communist Party Chief (Secretary) of "Tibet Autonomous Region" is commenting on how His Holiness the Dalai Lama is an "unworthy" religious leader for devout Tibetan. It makes me laugh to read such a comment coming from an atheist Chinese leader who has no deep understanding of Tibetan Buddhism or for that matter any other religion.

China has left no stone unturned to slander His Holiness. Despite exhausting all possible resources to diminish the eminence of HH the Dalai Lama, the Chinese government has failed miserably.

Inside “TAR” and China today, any reference to the Dalai Lama is banned and punishable by law. This has made the people inside “TAR” even more resolute and deepened their faith in HH the Dalai Lama.

This ongoing propaganda effort by the Chinese authorities often using a few hand picked Tibetan leaders who are under their regime proves their fear and obsession with HH the Dalai Lama.
