The members of caste councils will stage a gherao of Parliament if the government fails to ban marriages within the same sub-caste, BKU leader Mahendra Singh Tikait has said.
Tikait, a farmer leader and head of Balian 'khap' (caste council), said leaders at a panchayat in Jind in Haryana would decide the future course of action in this regard.
"We cannot tolerate such marriages. If the Central government fails to bring a legislation to ban such marriages, there will be no option but to take recourse to gherao of Parliament to press for the demand," he told reporters at Bhartiya Kisan Union headquarters at Sisauli near Muzaffarnagar.
An umbrella body of khap panchayats had earlier demanded an amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act to ban marriages within the same 'gotra' (sub-caste).
Their demand came after a court in Karnal recently awarded capital punishment to five persons in the double murder of a young couple Manoj and Babli -- who had married within the same gotra -- following the diktat of a khap panchayat. In recent days, several cases of khap panchayats harassing couples have come to the fore.
"Such marriages will harm brother-sister relations and rakhi tradition," Tikait said.
