There is doubt over the union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee chairing the meeting of empowered group of ministers (EGoM) on telecom to be held on Thursday.
The finance minister's office on Wednesday sent a letter to the department of telecommunications (DoT) asking whether it would be appropriate for Mukherjee to chair the last meeting as he will be filing nomination for election for the post of the president.
Sources said that the government has sent the letter to the Cabinet secretary to take the decision.
As part of terms for payment, the EGoM would discuss if telecom companies can mortgage spectrum or airwaves for seeking loans from the banks and financial institutions, official sources said.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a reserve price of Rs. 3,622 crore per MHz of spectrum. This means that a company will have to pay about Rs. 18,000 crore for pan-India spectrum for 5 Mhz.
