Go bird-watching
Between October and March, Delhi becomes the abode of hundreds of species of migratory birds. Although the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary has been a favourite with ornithologists, other catchment areas such as Dadri in Noida, Surajpur and the Okhla Bird Park near the Yamuna also see large-scale migration. All you need is a good pair of binoculars, a book on birds and of course warm clothes. For an introduction, the Delhi Birdwatching Society’s walk begins at 6.30am on Sunday. For details, call 98100 08625. On the Jaipur highway, 45 km from Delhi, is located the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary. To book a Haryana tourism hotel, visit the government tourist bureau at 36, Chanderlok Building, Janpath. For details call 23324910.

Spot a star
With the nights getting longer and the sky clearer, the winter months are best to bond over some astronomy. Members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Delhi meet every week at the Nehru Planetarium. For details, call Raghu Kalra at 99902 24091. Watch out for: the total lunar eclipse on December 10. The renovated Nehru Planetarium is another good place to whet your appetite on astronomy: Read a handwritten note by Galileo and marvel at Rakesh Sharma’s space suit. Sketch a monument
The city is home to some rare historical monuments. Brush up on your history and also acquire an artistic hobby by joining a sketching class. A few alumni of the Delhi College of Art have come together to form the The Flavour of Art Sketching Club. Although sketching is a year-long activity, says founder member Kiran Khullar (9811378979), but the play of light and shade is better in the winter. For sketching classes in East Delhi, try the Kalakriti School of Art and Culture on Vikas Marg. Log on to kalakritifoundation.com or call 9810241130. In Gurgaon, check out Rose n Wrap @ www.rosenwrap.blogspot.com
