BJP on Sunday claimed it has emerged as the largest party in the world with a membership strength of 8.75 crore, surpassing the Communist Party of China which has 8.6 crore members.
"Our latest membership figure is 8.75 crore, the largest in the world. But we ca'nt be compared with the Communist Party of China because the latter doesn’t operate in a multi-party democracy,” said party leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe.
Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh tweeted: “Today the BJP has become the biggest political party in the world in terms of number of members and volunteers.” He also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah for the achievement.
The ambitious online membership drive of the party was launched by Modi on November 1 last year by becoming its first member after dialing a mobile telephone number.
In the last membership drive carried out six years ago, the BJP had enrolled 3.2 crore members. This time it has received a huge response from Uttar Pradesh, which it swept in the last year’s Lok Sabha poll winning 73 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in alliance with Apna Dal.
The party introduced a hi-tech system whereby a person can become a BJP member by merely dialing a mobile number.
The party had set a target of enrolling 10 crore members across the country by March 31 but it fell short of its target.
The last one crore members were added in merely eight days when the party touched the 8-crore mark on March 23.
